Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) at Brigstock Latham’s CE Primary School

Believe ~ Grow ~ Flourish

“Jesus came to give us life, life in all its fullness”

Our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum at Brigstock Latham’s Primary School has been specifically developed to enable our children to develop an interest and ongoing curiosity about another language.

It is our belief that our children will gain an excellent understanding of how cultures around the world differ, as well as valuing the importance of communicating in a foreign language.

The core language taught at Brigstock is French, and our curriculum follows units outlined in the Lightbulb Languages scheme of work. This has been carefully selected to enable our children to experience ‘Life in all its Fullness’. All children in Key Stage 2 take part in weekly, high quality MFL lessons, delivered by a subject specialist in order to adequately prepare them for Key Stage 3. We involve our wider school community by seeking support and further expertise from our local secondary schools. This includes older learners working with our children to extend their learning.

Children will be given opportunities to learn relevant vocabulary and to formulate simple phrases to enable them to become engaged in simple conversational French. Our children will grow to become resilient language learners, who are not afraid to “have a go” in terms of pronunciation, trying out phrases and sentences and producing written tasks. These skills will enable our children to flourish and be confident to further develop their language skills in French and other MFLs.
